Shorts on Your Wedding Day? They’re the New Trend in Bridal

Good Morning America

Brides-to-be have a wide array of options available on their big day, from elegant ball gowns to plunging V-necks, crop tops and wedding gowns with color. And now, there are bridal shorts.

Good Morning America”’s Melissa Rycroft went to the Kleinfeld, the popular New York bridal store that’s the setting for the hit show, “Say Yes to the Dress,” to talk with Terry Hall, the store’s fashion director.

“If there's ever a day where a woman has to express who she is through her sense of fashion, it's her wedding day and it's not always a dress,” Hall said. "When you hear shorts you think casual. It doesn't have to be casual - it depends on the fabrication, construction, artistic detail, maybe it's embellished, but you can really make it quite dressy."

Hall also said she didn’t think many brides would wear shorts down the aisle, but would probably wear them at the reception.

“They'll wear it maybe if they're having a civil ceremony. Maybe it's going to be their outfit that they're going to don when they're going off for their honeymoon,” she added. “And I think they have just different interpretations. You could do a very dressy short outfit or you could do something a bit more casual.”

Asked whether she believed brides were pushing the envelope in their attire, Hall said yes.

“I think we're going to see more and more of that,” she said. “No bride now wants to have a who-wore-it-better moment - with Pinterest and social media, everybody's pictures are everywhere and they want to look unique, so I think this is a way that they can really express that desire.”

J.Crew offers ivory-colored sequined shorts at $450 a pair, saying in its product description: “You don't have to be a bridesmaid—or even invited to a wedding—to wear these shimmering shorts with hand-applied sequins for a slinky meets sporty look (read: stunning). Our favorite part? If you are a bride, they work at the reception, at the after party, on your honeymoon and for pretty much any occasion after that.”

“GMA” talked with some brides-to-be at Kleinfeld to get their take on shorts for the big day.

“I find shorts to be very casual so it's not something that has ever crossed my mind,” one woman said.

Another said she loved jumpsuits but not for her wedding day, and another said she would consider the more casual look for a destination wedding.
