World's shortest man Chandra Dangi dies in America at the age of 75

The shortest man in history has died from pneumonia at the age of 75.

Chandra Dangi broke the record in 2012 when he was crowned by  Guinness World Records in Kathmandu, Nepal as the shortest man documented in history. He was 21.5ins.

He beat the record set by Gul Mohammed, from New Delhi, India, who measured 22.5ins and died at the age of 40 in 1997.

Three of Mr Dangi’s five brothers were less than four feet tall, while his two sisters and two other brothers are of average height.

According to source, Mr Dangi died at the Lyndon B. Johnson Tropical Medical Center in Pago Pago in American Samoa on September 4 2015 after a brief illness. Read on...

Tragic: Chandra Bahadur Dandi has died

Mr Dangi became a local hero when he was crowned shortest man - allowing him to travel the world and send money home to his impoverished home village Reemkholi, 335 miles southwest of Kathmandu.

Before that he made placemats and head straps for villagers carrying heavy loads.












A spokeswoman at the hospital said he died of an undisclosed disease but it was believed he’d been suffering from pneumonia, as reported by the Kathmandu Post.Family friend Sujit Dilip, owner of India’s well-known Rambo Circus, based in Pune, said: ‘Today, our circus is flooded with tears at the loss of the world’s smallest man...whom we lovingly called Prince Chandra.’


He was being treated in Nepal but traveled the 7,500 miles to American Samoa for an appearance and had to be rushed to hospital after his symptoms worsened.

Guinness World Records spokesman released a tribute to the ‘extraordinary’ dwarf.

It read: "Guinness World Records (GWR), the global authority in record breaking achievements, is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Mr Chandra Dangi, who held the title of shortest man in the world.

"GWR would like to express its sincere and heartfelt condolences to Mr Dangi’s family in this difficult time.

"He will be remembered forever as an iconic and extraordinary record holder."

Mr Dangi, 21 and a half inches, met the world's tallest living manSultan Kosen, 8 feet, 3 inches, for the first time in London in November 2014 to celebrate Guinness World Records Day

"Even though he is short and I am tall, we have had similar struggles throughout our lives and when I look into Chandra's eyes, I can see he's a good man," Kosen told the Daily Telegraph in 2014.

The second tallest man in the world is India's  Dharmendra Singh, He is 8ft1in.
